Counseling

A healing relationship is one in which the helping person (a therapist) assists another person (a client) explore positive solutions for resolving life challenges or improving personality traits. The helping person (therapist) brings authenticity, respect, warmth, clarity, caring, and a deeply sensitive, non-judgmental understanding to the process of examining life issues and problems. The person being helped (client) brings a willingness to look at and work on current life issues.

In a counseling session, any topic may be discussed, with the primary goal of listening, understanding, and giving you space to be with your feelings and emotions. When emotionally sensitive issues arise, we may take a body-centered approach. This means we use awareness of the self and the sensations in the body as a doorway to understanding unresolved experiences or "unfinished business" that is still affecting you. Other methods may also be used, and I may refer you to resources (such as reading a book) or give you homework assignments.

Some people need one or a few counseling sessions with just some general guidance to understand how to achieve their goals for change, while others may need months or years in a long-term healing relationship. I accept as clients people who I believe have the capacity to solve their own problems with my assistance. I can help individuals on the level of general personal growth, self-development, and life skill enhancement. I do not work with individuals who have psychiatric problems, severe personality disorders, addictions, eating disorders, or problems with substance abuse.

To provide counseling services, I have registered in Colorado as an unlicensed psychotherapist. My credentials, education, and experience include a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of New Mexico in Latin American Studies in 1981, Registered Polarity Practitioner certification from the American Polarity Therapy Association in 1998, more than 12 years experience in Peer Counseling, and classes, seminars, and workshops in Somatic Experiencing, Re-Evaluation Co-Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, and Ethics. I maintain an ongoing relationship with an experienced clinical supervisor for doing this work.

The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies has the general responsibility of regulating the practice of psychologists, social workers, counselors, therapists, and individuals who practice psychotherapy. The agency within the department that has responsibility specifically for licensed and unlicensed psychotherapists is:

Department of Regulatory Agencies, Mental Health Section
1560 Broadway, Suite 1370
Denver, Colorado, 80202
(303) 894-7766

If you are interested in counseling, please let me know at the time you schedule your first appointment. Due to time limitations, I can work with only a limited number of clients in long-term healing relationships. Short-term therapy is also available for working on individual issues like life challenges, improving relationship skills, or managing and relieving stress. I am happy to support any of my clients needing personal assistance for one or several sessions.
